“Established in 1901” proclaims the church’s website. That’s the succinct history of the First Baptist Church in Fukuoka. But there is so much more to the story.
The year 1901 was indeed a turning point. It marked Japan’s first general election. It was also the year when actors of both genders were allowed to perform together on stage. More importantly for us, it was the year the First Baptist Church in Fukuoka was officially established.
But its roots go deeper. In 1890 American Baptists J.W. McCollum and J.A. Glendinning started the Kyushu’s first Baptist preaching place in Wakatsu. Two years later in 1892, the “Fukuoka Baptist Church Preaching Place” was born. This was the predecessor to the First Baptist Church in Fukuoka. Then in 1901 the church officially organized. They welcomed Reverend Kitaichiro Sato as their first pastor.
The First Baptist Church in Fukuoka has faced trials. During World War II, it was forced to join the Japan Christian Group by national order. In June 1945, the church building burned down in the Fukuoka Air Raid.
Yet faith endured. In 1948, American friends helped rebuild the church. They erected a barrack-style building in the current location of the First Baptist Church in Fukuoka in Nishi Park. Later in 1954, American missionary and architect W.M. Vories designed a new sanctuary.
Through social changes and turmoil pastors and members held firm. They protected their faith and worked together. They fulfilled their mission in Fukuoka. The church sees this survival as a testament to God’s guidance.
Throughout its history, the First Baptist Church in Fukuoka has birthed new congregations. Since 1922, it has helped establish twelve churches and preaching locations. The First Baptist Church in Fukuoka calls itself a “church that produces”.
