The gentle lapping of waves against the shore. That’s the sound of Orapiu Bay. Nestled on Waiheke Island’s southeastern coast this tranquil haven is more than just a pretty picture.

Orapiu Bay is a place steeped in history. Māori people used Te Matuku Bay for centuries. They gathered food and landed their waka there. It’s also where the first Pākehā settlers arrived on Waiheke. A school even stood on this very land.

The story of Orapiu Bay includes a bustling wharf built in 1915. Imagine the activity. Boats arriving and departing. People going about their daily lives. This is the same area that was subdivided in 1916. Before that boarding houses dotted the landscape.

The Orapiu Road Board formed in 1921. It’s said this board may have been the smallest local authority in all of New Zealand. It controlled a mere 35 hectares. It later merged with the Ostend Road Board in 1947.

Today Orapiu Bay boasts a small population. Around 70 people call this peaceful corner of the world home. They’re a mix of ethnicities. Many enjoy the beautiful views across to Ponui Island. The quiet atmosphere of Orapiu Bay attracts those seeking a connection with nature.

A coastal walk links Orapiu Bay to Pearl Bay. This is a perfect way to experience the beauty of the area. Take a stroll. Feel the sea breeze on your face. Let the serenity wash over you.

You can visit Orapiu Bay by car. A drive of about 50 minutes from the Matiatia ferry terminal is necessary. A ferry service was available for a while. But as of February 1st 2025 it’s not running.

So take your time at Orapiu Bay. Appreciate the beauty of the place. Breathe in the fresh air. Feel the history beneath your feet. And take away with you the peaceful magic of this special place.
