A simple plot of land, destined for a Baptist church. That’s how the story of the First Baptist Church of Irving begins. In 1903, the founders of Irving, Julius Otto Schulze and Otis Brown, envisioned a town with spiritual foundations. They set aside land for several denominations, including the Baptists. The town flourished, and just a year later, in January 1904, the Irving Baptist Church officially came into being. Eighteen charter members, led by the Rev. Dr. J. B. Gambrell, formed the core of this new congregation. The Rev. W. J. Shipman became the first pastor, holding services once a month. The early days saw the congregation moving from place to place. They held services in a local schoolhouse, rented spaces, and even a temporary tabernacle right here on this very spot. Finally, in 1911, their first permanent church building was completed. The First Baptist Church of Irving continued to evolve. In 1920, they appointed their first full-time pastor, the Rev. W. T. Newsom. The name officially changed to First Baptist Church of Irving in 1940, solidifying its identity within the growing community. A new sanctuary arose in 1951, a testament to the church’s growth and influence. By 1964, the church’s footprint expanded to encompass an entire city block. The First Baptist Church of Irving has mirrored the growth of the city itself. From its humble beginnings with eighteen members, it has expanded its reach to offer a wide array of programs. These include worship services, educational initiatives, missionary work, and community outreach. The church’s journey reflects the spirit of Irving, a town built on faith and community.
