Whispers of ancient secrets linger here in Årslev Skov.
Welcome to Årslev Skov a smaller woodland area near Aarhus. It’s a place where the old meets the new. Half of the forest is mature and ancient. The other half is newly planted. This newer section was created on former farmland.
Årslev Skov sits nestled between the Herning Motorway to the west. Edwin Rahrs Vej and the Aarhus-Randers railway line border it to the north. Residential areas lie to its east. Fields and farmland surround it to the south. Silkeborgvej cuts right through the heart of the forest.
Imagine the ancient oaks and beeches their leaves whispering stories of centuries past. This older part of Årslev Skov is home to a hidden stream the Voldbæk. It flows from north to south. It meanders through the old growth before reaching Årslev Engsø. The newer plantings in Årslev Skov are expected to create an ecological corridor. Eventually this will connect to the True Skov to the north. It is hoped this will help spread native plants.
Årslev Skov isn’t just about nature. It’s a repository of history. Scattered throughout the woodland are ancient burial mounds. Six are north of Silkeborgvej. Two more lie in the smaller southern section. Most are overgrown or damaged over time. Three however are protected. Nearby just outside the forest lies the Årslev dyssen a dolmen from the Stone Age. A nearby excavated stone chest is another relic from that era. Just west of the forest beyond the Herning Motorway are the remains of both Stone Age and Iron Age settlements.
Today Årslev Skov offers modern amenities too. The new section near the motorways has fences. Access is via gates from parking areas. These are found near Logistikparken Aarhus in the north and Silkeborgvej in the south. Walking running and cycling routes have been built. A paved cycle path connects Silkeborgvej to Logistikparken. It even uses a tunnel under Edwin Rahrs Vej and a bridge over the railway. A large dog park south of Silkeborgvej provides a space for canine companions.
So explore Årslev Skov. Discover its blend of ancient history and modern convenience. Let the whispers of the past and the rustling of the leaves guide you. Let the forest work its magic.
