Established in 1995 the Chinese Heritage Centre serves as a museum a library and a research institute. It’s housed in a building with traditional Chinese architecture. This building was constructed between 1953 and 1955. Businessman Lim Lean Teng donated generously for its construction. Originally it served as the administration building for Nanyang University. This university was unique. It was the only Chinese-medium university outside of China.
The story of the Chinese Heritage Centre is intertwined with the story of Nanyang University. In 1981 the Singapore government established Nanyang Technological Institute on the same campus. The building however retained its Chinese character. Later in 1995 the Chinese Heritage Centre was born. It became a non-profit organization. It’s governed by an international board. The Centre’s significance grew. In December 1999 it was designated a national monument. In 2011 it became an autonomous institute under Nanyang Technological University. It’s primarily funded by private donations and government matching grants.
