Here stands Denmark’s Defence Staff. It is more than just a building. The Defence Staff symbolizes the heart of Denmark’s military command. This is where decisions shape the nation’s defense. The Defence Staff is vital to Denmark’s security.
The Danish Defence Command is the top military authority. It coordinates all branches of the Danish Armed Forces. Think of it as the conductor of a complex orchestra. Each instrument must play in harmony. The Defence Command ensures this harmony. It falls directly under the Ministry of Defence.
Let’s step back in time. The Defence Command was established in 1969. This occurred after law no. 334 was passed on June 18, 1969. The aim was resource efficiency and a true combined defense. It followed the defense reconstruction of 1950. Before this, separate commands existed for the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
These commands were combined in 1969. They were placed under the Ministry of Defence. The Chief of Defence gained full command. However, the old branch commands continued within the Defence Command. A major reconstruction occurred in 1982. This further unified the organization.
Between 1973 and 2006, the Defence Command was located in Vedbæk. It was housed in a modern building of steel and concrete. In March 1973, they moved into the building constructed from 1970-1972.
In July 2006, the Defence Command moved to Holmen Naval Base. This is where we stand today. The location reflects its close ties to naval operations.
The Defence Command saw major reorganization as a result of the Danish Defence Agreement 2013–17. It was even renamed Joint Defence Command. But on January 1, 2019, the name reverted to Defence Command.
The Defence Command includes the Chief of Defence. It also includes the Defence Staff. They work together. They configure and command the military units. The Chief of Defence leads with the help of the Chief of the Defence Staff.
The current acting Chief of Defence is Michael Wiggers Hyldgaard. He has held this position since April 3, 2024. Kenneth Pedersen has been Chief of the Defence Staff since 2019. They form the high command of the Armed Forces.
The Defence Command faces many tasks. These are solved both nationally and internationally. The Ministry of Defence manages these tasks. They range from advising the Minister to overseeing agencies.
Denmark has supported Ukraine since the 2022 invasion by Russia. The Defence Command plays a crucial role in this. Support includes weapons, equipment, and military training.
The Defence Staff’s motto is “Viribus Unitis.” This means “United Strength.” It reflects the collaborative nature of the command. The Defence Staff includes both civilian and military personnel. Around 170 civilians and 80 military personnel work here.
