Before the 1930s the Luppe was a branch of the White Elster river. It flowed through the Leipzig floodplain. This area near the confluence of the Saale and White Elster rivers is near Leipzig and Halle. The Luppe’s path changed dramatically in the 1930s. The construction of the Neue Luppe a new channel altered the river’s course. The old Luppe’s flow was reduced. The Nahle and Alte Luppe are remnants of the Luppe’s original route. The remaining Luppe now flows west from near Kleinliebenau. It no longer receives water from its former upper course. The changes to the Luppe had significant ecological consequences. The floodplain forest lost its essential water supply. The regular flooding crucial for the ecosystem stopped. The wetlands dried up threatening biodiversity. The “Lebendige Luppe” project aimed to reverse these changes. This ambitious project began in 2012. Its goal was to restore the Luppe’s former stream courses. The project aimed to reconnect the Luppe to the rivers. It was a multifaceted undertaking. Revitalizing former stream courses was part of the plan. The project also aimed to raise awareness of the importance of floodplains. Healthy floodplains provide numerous benefits. They mitigate flood risk purify water and support biodiversity. The project received funding from the Federal Program for Biological Diversity. This program aims to promote biodiversity and ecosystem services. The “Green Ring of Leipzig” and the NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union) supported the project. The work on the northern part of the Neue Luppe was completed in 2016. This included modernizing a water intake structure. Water was supplied to the Papitzer Lachen and surrounding areas. The southern section’s revitalization is ongoing. This 16-kilometer-long project will take place in phases. The Luppe’s restoration is a testament to human intervention’s ecological impact. It showcases how restoration projects can help revive natural systems and their many services. The Lebendige Luppe project is a success story for the Luppe. It is a symbol of hope for the future of floodplains. It also shows that it is possible to restore damaged ecosystems.
