Pop! A champagne cork explodes. That’s the sound of Sektkellerei Bussard’s legacy. Right here in Radebeul.
This isn’t just any sparkling wine factory. Sektkellerei Bussard is where Saxon sparkling wine history began. In 1836 three visionary winegrowers invested a fortune. 100000 thalers to be exact. A risky gamble. No one knew if the bubbly would catch on.
Their first Kellermeister a Frenchman named Monsieur Mouzon arrived. He brought the classic Methode Champenoise from Reims. Over ten Frenchmen worked here. Many early bottles burst. The process was tricky. Yet they persevered. That first year they sold 37000 bottles. A resounding success.
Sektkellerei Bussard became a favorite of Saxon royalty. Kings and queens enjoyed its exquisite sparkling wines. They even visited the manufactory. Bussard became synonymous with quality. It gained a reputation far beyond Saxony. The winery even had its own restaurant. A popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
The Second World War brought a halt to production. After the war it took a while to resume. In the 1970s Sektkellerei Bussard became part of a state-run operation. Sadly the traditional bottle fermentation method ceased. The focus shifted to mass-produced sparkling wine. The building itself is now apartments. The cellars remain. A testament to the rich history.
Yet the Bussard name lives on. Schloss Wackerbarth holds the rights. They continue to produce Bussard Sekt. A tribute to those early pioneers. Their risky venture. Their delicious bubbly legacy. So raise your glass. To Sektkellerei Bussard. A toast to Saxon sparkling wine.
