Within the serene Fasanengarten lies the Grand Ducal Burial Chapel. This is not just any chapel. It’s a poignant monument to Baden’s history. Built between 1889 and 1896 it stands as a testament to grief and remembrance.

Grand Duke Friedrich I and his wife Luise of Prussia commissioned the chapel. Their youngest son Ludwig Wilhelm died young. They wanted a quiet place to mourn him far from the city’s noise. The chapel became their private sanctuary a place of quiet contemplation. Before this Baden’s rulers were buried in Pforzheim or Karlsruhe’s city church. These were locations the Grand Duke and Duchess couldn’t visit discreetly.

The chapel’s exterior is striking. Its proportions and tall tower are designed for distant viewing. Gargoyles and dragon figures adorn the building. These are the imaginative creations of Karlsruhe sculptor Sauer. He infused the structure with fantastical detail.

Inside the upper church light floods the space. Rows of columns create a majestic atmosphere. The upper row is made of dark Labradorite. They support sandstone consoles and a wooden barrel vault. Four angel heads crafted from light yellow limestone add to the beauty. Look closely. You’ll find stone lizards hidden among the leaves of the apse frieze. Hermann Volz created magnificent marble tombs for Prince Ludwig Wilhelm Grand Duke Friedrich I and his wife.

Broad steps lead down to the crypt. Behind a wrought-iron gate lies a bright and peaceful room. Eighteen coffins rest there. The last burial took place in 1952. Many members of the Grand Ducal family including Grand Duke Ludwig I and his wife are buried here. Some were initially buried in Karlsruhe’s Evangelical City Church. They were moved to the chapel after World War II.

The Grand Ducal Burial Chapel is a significant landmark. It’s managed by the State Palaces and Gardens Baden-Württemberg. Since 2011 the upper church has been open to visitors during certain times of the year. The crypt is only accessible during special guided tours. This magnificent chapel stands as a silent guardian of Baden’s past a place of both sorrow and enduring beauty.
