Can a school have a second life? Springwest Academy stands as proof that it can. Originally known as Feltham Community College, Springwest Academy has seen remarkable transformations throughout its history. The school, situated on Browells Lane in Feltham, has a rich past intertwined with the local community. Springwest Academy wasn’t always Springwest Academy. In the 1960s, three schools—Tudor Grammar, De Brome School, and Lafone School—merged to form Feltham Comprehensive School. Imagine the logistical puzzle of operating across three separate sites: the Upper School on Browells Lane, and East and West Buildings on Boundaries Road. Students even had to navigate a footbridge over the bustling A312 Uxbridge Road to attend classes! The school motto, a holdover from those early days, is “seize the day.” Springwest Academy’s journey wasn’t always smooth. The late 1970s brought challenges and a less-than-stellar reputation. Yet, even then, green shoots of success emerged. Think of the vibrant musical productions, and the unique exchange program with the prestigious Eton College. Feltham students experienced life at Eton, while Eton students immersed themselves in the Feltham community. The appointment of Paul M. Grant as Head Teacher marked a turning point. Discipline and standards improved. Hounslow Council invested significantly, leading to new facilities. An art, design, and technology building arose. The borough’s first astroturf pitches appeared. The school embraced its community role. It opened its doors for adult education classes, allowing former students a second chance at academic success. Springwest Academy sits on historic ground. Part of the campus once belonged to Hanworth Park, an early London aerodrome. This land also held Hanworth Palace, a hunting lodge of King Henry VIII. The school’s earlier incarnation as Tudor Grammar reflects this royal connection. In 2011, the school converted to an academy, retaining its name as Feltham Community College. The final transformation came in 2016 with the adoption of the name Springwest Academy. The actor Martin Freeman, known for his roles in “Sherlock” and “The Hobbit,” even opened the new school library in 2021. Springwest Academy continues to evolve, but its commitment to providing a great education remains constant.
