Did you ever hear of a nun who outran a collapsing church roof? Here at Saint Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Catholic Church in Chicago, that very act of bravery unfolded. Saint Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Church, nestled in the Cragin neighborhood, has witnessed dramatic moments since its humble beginnings. Originally a mission of the prominent Polish parish, St. Stanislaus Kostka, this church began with just seven Polish families in a simple, two-story wooden structure. In 1901, the first resident pastor, Reverend John Obysracz, was appointed. By 1907, the small wooden church met a fiery end, struck by lightning during a violent storm. As the church burned, Sister Philippine Lama, a Franciscan Sister teaching at the parish school, sprang into action. She evacuated the children and, with the help of some brave men, salvaged many church items. Even more heroically, Sister Philippine ventured back inside to retrieve the Blessed Sacrament. Just as she grasped it, the roof collapsed. She escaped unharmed, a true miracle. The community rallied, converting a parishioner’s hall into a makeshift church for Easter services. Sister Philippine’s bravery was lauded during the Good Friday Mass. A new church arose from the ashes, designed by J.G. Steinbach, finally completed in 1927. But the story doesn’t end there. In 1942, artist John Mallin redecorated the church for its Golden Jubilee. His vibrant murals still grace the vestibule today, depicting Polish Christianity and honoring figures like King John Casimir and Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Although some sanctuary paintings were later removed, the church retains much of its historic charm. Today, Saint Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Church continues to serve the community, offering Mass in Polish, English, and Spanish, a testament to its enduring spirit and the heroism of those who shaped its story.
