Stepping into a world of stories, we find ourselves at the Dolton Public Library. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the community’s thirst for knowledge, a beacon that has illuminated minds for generations. The Dolton Public Library’s story begins before its physical existence, before the shelves groaned under the weight of books, before the hushed whispers of turning pages filled its rooms. It started with a shared dream, a vision held by the Dolton-Riverdale Junior Woman’s Club, the Franklin PTA, and the PTA of District 148. In the early 1950s, these groups recognized the need for a local public library. Their initial attempt, a tax referendum in 1953, failed. Undeterred, the Dolton-Riverdale Woman’s Club, led by the determined Mrs. Emma Dillner, rallied the community. They envisioned a “Village Library,” a place where everyone could access the world of knowledge. Donations poured in, both monetary and literary. The Dolton Village Board offered space on the second floor of Village Hall, a temporary home for this burgeoning dream. In 1954, fifty-two organizations came together, their collective energy laying the groundwork for the library. The state of Illinois, recognizing their dedication, loaned 500 books. Another 700 were gathered through a door-to-door campaign, a testament to the community’s shared purpose. The Village Library, a testament to community spirit, opened its doors on September 26, 1954. With 5,000 books and magazines ready for eager hands, it quickly became a vital hub. Volunteers, from grandmothers cataloging books to children pasting pockets, played a crucial role. The initial budget was a mere $1,200 a year, but the library’s impact was immeasurable. The Dolton Public Library continued to grow, expanding into a second room in Village Hall by 1955. A generous bequest from Edith Dolton offered the promise of a permanent home, although structural issues prevented its realization. The community’s commitment finally bore fruit in 1963 with a successful tax referendum. A new building, costing $200,000 and capable of housing 35,000 books, rose on the site of the former Dolton House. This marked a new chapter for the Dolton Public Library, a testament to the community’s enduring vision. The library’s growth necessitated further expansion in 1979, with a 16,000-square-foot addition. Today, the Dolton Public Library stands as a vibrant testament to the power of community, a place where stories continue to unfold, and knowledge continues to inspire. It is not just a library, it’s the heart of Dolton.
