Opened in 1916 Morgan Park High School stands proudly on West Pryor Avenue. It’s a Chicago landmark a testament to the community’s enduring spirit. Morgan Park High School wasn’t always here. Initially classes were held in a rented grammar school. Imagine the cramped classrooms the shared resources.

The school’s early years weren’t easy. Illinois law mandated schooling for children up to age 14. Morgan Park though lacked a dedicated high school. The Morgan Park Academy existed but it only accepted boys around 1897. Girls needed their own public high school.

The school’s construction was a community effort. Funds were raised land was purchased. This was just before Morgan Park became part of Chicago in 1914. The new building opened in 1916. It was a moment of pride for the community. The first graduating class numbered 43 students.

Morgan Park High School faced challenges beyond its construction. In 1934 over 2000 students went on strike. They protested overcrowding and the integration of African-American students. The strike highlighted the racial tensions of the era. The strike eventually ended with students returning to an integrated school. Frank Sinatra even visited to support integration.

Through the years Morgan Park High School expanded. Additions were made in 1925 and 1965 to accommodate a growing student body. By 1975 enrollment reached 3300 students. This led to court-ordered enrollment plans to manage overcrowding while maintaining integration. The school continues to serve approximately 1400 students today. The 1983 expansion brought significant improvements to the campus. New athletic fields tennis courts and parking were added.

Today Morgan Park High School is more than a school. It’s an IB World School offering diverse programs. It boasts a rich history of racial economic and religious integration. The school’s legacy is built on resilience community support and a commitment to academic excellence. It’s a place where students from all backgrounds can thrive.
