Is it possible for a backyard shed to house a scientific sensation? Here, at the Focke-Windkanal, it did. This isn’t just any building. It’s a monument to ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.

The Focke-Windkanal stands as a testament to the work of Henrich Focke. He was the co-founder of Focke-Wulf and a pioneer in helicopter design. In 1960, at the age of 70, Focke built this laboratory in Bremen. He dedicated himself to aerodynamic studies until his death in 1979. His focus was on slow flight and helicopter stability.

Imagine this laboratory, lost and forgotten for two decades. In 1997, Kai Steffen rediscovered it. He was a graduate student inspired by Focke’s memoirs. The find was near Bremen’s main station, a backyard shed concealing a treasure.

Step inside the Focke-Windkanal. You’ll see a closed recirculating wind tunnel. It was designed for subsonic speeds. It could generate wind speeds up to 16 meters per second. What’s truly remarkable is its simplicity. Kitchen scales measured forces. Stove pipes directed airflow. Curtains reduced swirl. Focke used whatever was available.

Picture Henrich Focke at 85. He had just stepped out for a moment. Everything remains as he left it. The building, though, was in poor condition. Renovation was essential.

Now restored, the Focke-Windkanal looks as it did in 1975. It’s more than a museum. Schools and universities conduct scientific experiments here. Modern technology complements the original setup. A personal computer and electronic pressure cells enhance measurements. The wind machine can be controlled in two ways. An old-fashioned 10-stage resistor cascade or a stepless frequency inverter. With 14 kW of electrical power, it generates winds up to 16 m/s.

But here’s a little secret. The Focke-Windkanal nearly disappeared. In March 2017, it faced closure. The reason was a terminated usage agreement. But thankfully, a trust foundation was established in 2019. This ensured the museum’s preservation.

The Focke-Windkanal received a special honor on September 15, 2019. The Vertical Flight Society designated it a Vertical Flight Heritage Site. This recognizes its international significance. It highlights the vital role Focke-Windkanal played in helicopter development.

Since 2023, guided tours are available again. The Focke-Windkanal e. V. offers them by appointment. Even laboratory experiments are possible.

The Focke-Windkanal represents the blend of historical significance and hands-on research. It is a place where Henrich Focke’s legacy lives on. It inspires future generations of scientists and engineers. It demonstrates that innovation can arise from simple means. Sometimes, the greatest discoveries happen in a backyard shed.
