Across the Rhine River, the Naturpark Siebengebirge beckons. It whispers tales of ancient giants and volcanic fury. The Naturpark Siebengebirge isn’t just seven mountains, as the name suggests. It’s a symphony of 42 peaks, remnants of 390 volcanoes. These peaks rise above the Rhine floodplains between Bonn and Bad Honnef. They offer breathtaking perspectives. From the Oelberg, the highest point at 461 meters, you can see the Cologne Cathedral on a clear day. Your gaze can sweep across the Rhine Valley, the Westerwald, and even to the Taunus. The Naturpark Siebengebirge holds a special place in German conservation history. In 1836, the Prussian state purchased Drachenfels. This stopped quarrying operations. It marked a victory for landscape and nature conservation. It showed that these values could triumph over economic interests. The Verschönerungsverein für das Siebengebirge (VVS) continued this legacy. Founded in 1869, it acquired the heart of today’s 112-square-kilometer Naturpark. This area became a nature reserve in 1923. It stands alongside Lüneburger Heide as one of Germany’s oldest nature reserves. The VVS managed the Naturpark Siebengebirge until 2017. Within the Naturpark, deciduous forests cling to rugged cliffs. Evergreen slopes descend into valleys. These valleys hold small streams and scattered orchards. Located at the boundary of Atlantic and continental climate zones, the park supports diverse flora. Knorrige oaks and holly trees thrive here. Rare and endangered species find refuge in this sanctuary. Black storks, midwife toads, stag beetles, black woodpeckers, eagle owls, and sand lizards all call this park home. Abandoned quarries within the Naturpark Siebengebirge offer glimpses into the past. Weilberg near Heisterbacherrott and Rabenley near Oberkassel reveal geological strata in a striking cross-section. The Naturpark also boasts a unique distinction. It’s the only area in North Rhine-Westphalia where wine has been cultivated for centuries. This occurs near the “Hölle” viewpoint. The Naturpark Siebengebirge also pioneered the concept of “Naturwaldzellen” (natural forest cells). In the 1980s, 140 to 150-year-old beech and sessile oak trees on Nonnenstromberg received this designation. The beech stands on Petersberg joined them. In 2010, the VVS forest became the first wilderness area outside of national parks in North Rhine-Westphalia. Today, the protected forest area spans 650 hectares. This includes forests on the slopes of Petersberg, Oelberg, and Löwenburg. Here, beech and oak trees age and decay naturally. Non-native conifers are removed. The resulting deadwood creates unique habitats. These support hundreds of fungi, beetle, and other species. The Naturpark Siebengebirge transforms into a wilderness experience for fascinated visitors.
