Orgeval a name whispered through time. Its history stretches back to prehistory. Flint tools unearthed here speak of Neolithic inhabitants. This land saw Gallo-Roman activity too. A therapeutic spring once flowed here. It was rediscovered in 1708. Sadly its healing waters were forgotten by 1850.
Orgeval’s story truly begins in 1180. The Abbaye Notre-Dame d’Abbecourt was founded then. Gasce de Poissy a local lord established this abbey. It belonged to the Diocese of Chartres. Sadly it was destroyed in the early 19th century. Only the name Abbecourt remains in a local lane.
Orgeval’s church Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul stands as a testament to its enduring spirit. Its Romanesque architecture whispers tales of the 11th century. A spire and octagonal tower pierce the sky. The nave though is younger from the 16th century. Jeanne d’Arc passed through Orgeval. She was on her way to liberate Poissy. Gold was even sought here in the early 17th century. What treasures lay hidden?
The town’s coat of arms reflects a rich past. It’s inspired by the Abbaye Notre-Dame d’Abbecourt. It features a golden eagle on a dark background. Its origins are rooted in the 16th century. The eagle symbolizes Jean VII Enguerrand the abbey’s abbot.
Orgeval was once predominantly farmland. Numerous farms dotted the landscape. Names like Les Bergeries and Les Flambertins evoke this agricultural past. Today few remain. Cereals and fruits were once vital to the town. Orgeval’s produce reached the bustling Parisian markets. Even Rungis benefited from the local bounty.
Orgeval however changed. Farmland gave way to housing. Commercial activity grew along the route de Quarante Sous. The A13 motorway altered Orgeval forever. It opened after World War II. The town has grown and evolved. It’s a place where history and modernity intermingle.
Orgeval’s charm lies in its blend of history and modern life. Famous faces walked these streets. Georges Docquois a writer and poet died here. Paul Strand the celebrated American photographer lived here. So did Catherine and Claude Rich renowned actors. Their legacy lives on in Orgeval. The town’s history is interwoven with their stories. Orgeval a place rich in history and charm. A testament to the passage of time.
