Amidst the bustling heart of Jakarta, stands Gereja GPIB EBEN HAEZER. It silently whispers tales of resilience and faith. Gereja GPIB EBEN HAEZER emerged from the ashes of Indonesia’s struggle for independence. In 1945, amidst the turmoil, a small group of Christians in the Kramat area began to gather. They called their fledgling community “Jemaat Masohi”. This congregation, a beacon of hope in uncertain times, was officially recognized by the Gereja Protestan Indonesia (GPI) on May 1, 1946. They renamed it “Jemaat Eben Haezer,” signifying “the stone of help.” This name, drawn from the biblical story of Samuel, resonated deeply. It symbolized the divine assistance that had brought them through their trials. Gereja GPIB EBEN HAEZER initially held services in a humble, repurposed coal warehouse. The congregation persevered, their faith undeterred by their modest surroundings. In 1956, their dedication bore fruit with the inauguration of their first permanent church building. This marked a significant milestone in their journey. The Gereja GPIB EBEN HAEZER officially joined the newly formed Gereja Protestan di Indonesia bagian Barat (GPIB) on April 29, 1956. This integration solidified their place within the larger Protestant community. The church continued to grow, serving as a spiritual anchor for its congregation. Then, in 1984, a new chapter unfolded. A two-story building was unveiled, providing an expanded sanctuary and office spaces. This marked a new era of growth and service for Gereja GPIB EBEN HAEZER. From a small gathering in a coal warehouse to a vibrant two-story church, Gereja GPIB EBEN HAEZER’s story embodies the spirit of perseverance and faith that defines its community. It stands as a testament to the power of hope amidst adversity, a beacon of faith in the heart of Jakarta.
