It was designed by Martin Leydel in the Neoclassical style. Archduke Maximilian Francis of Austria commissioned it. He wanted a place for balls and entertainment for his court and spa visitors. The spa was booming thanks to Godesberg’s famed spring water.

The Redoute wasn’t just for dancing. Plays operas ballets and concerts filled its halls. Ludwig van Beethoven himself played there. He was a violinist and violist in the court orchestra. This was its German premiere only two years after its Viennese debut. A remarkable historical fact indeed.

The Redoute’s history is far from straightforward. Under French rule entertainment ceased. It then became an art gallery and a girls’ school. In 1856 Victor Wendelstadt a Cologne banker purchased the Redoute. He expanded the adjacent park. He transformed it into an English landscape garden. A gate from this garden was even relocated to Cologne’s main station. The Wendelstadt family hosted concerts featuring famous musicians like Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms.

After World War II the British Army used the Redoute. With the founding of the Federal Republic it resumed its role as a venue for state receptions. On September 12 1949 Theodor Heuss Germany’s first president hosted a reception there. The Redoute hosted many prestigious events. These included New Year’s receptions for the president and celebrations for national holidays by ambassadors.

From 1973 to 1976 the Redoute underwent restoration. Günnewig Hotels & Restaurants managed it from 1975. They offered the halls for private celebrations and conferences. The government and ambassadors continued to use the Redoute for events until 1999. Splendid furnishings from the national collection adorned it. These were carefully chosen based on images from the Bonner Kulturamt. These were removed in 2010 when the contract ended. Further restoration began in early 2011. This included technical upgrades to meet modern standards. Since late 2011 Redoute Bonn GmbH has managed the building. It continues to host various private events seminars and weddings.
