Lutheran Church of our Redeemer

Did you ever hear of a church built on marshy land? Right here, at 30 Duke’s Road, stands the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer wasn’t always so firmly planted. In the late 1950s, the Lutheran Conference in Malaya sought to establish Singapore’s first Lutheran church. The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer became that church, dedicated in March 1960. The journey to its construction was fraught with challenges. The initially chosen land in Queenstown was delayed due to the Bukit Ho Swee fire. An alternative plot in Geylang, donated by Ms. Amal, proved too far from the city center. Finally, Duke’s Road emerged as the ideal location, accessible from Bukit Timah Road. However, the land itself presented another hurdle. It was marshy and prone to flooding. Funds, painstakingly gathered from various Lutheran groups, had to be partly used to raise the land level. Even with extensive piling and six feet of fill, the floor sank just before completion, necessitating costly rework. The grand dedication ceremony was a joyous occasion, attended by 300 people. Five royal palm trees were planted, symbolizing the five contributing groups that funded the construction of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. The early years of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer were challenging. Pastors came and went. Congregations struggled to form. Yet, through persistent community outreach, including door-to-door visits and even the distribution of relief supplies, the church began to grow. The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer served as a beacon of hope, drawing people together through faith and shared experience. It even played a role during the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation. Many Batak members returned to Indonesia, while those who remained joined the English service. The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer became a melting pot, a testament to the resilience of faith and community.
