Initially, Dallas and Fort Worth had separate airports. Dallas had Love Field, and Fort Worth had Meacham Field. In the 1940s, a small airport near the current DFW site served the military. Fort Worth later renamed it Amon Carter Field in the 1950s.
In 1961, the FAA declined funding for separate Dallas and Fort Worth airports. This pushed the cities to revisit a joint airport proposal. Dallas Love Field was congested and couldn’t expand. In 1964, the federal government threatened to choose a site if the cities didn’t agree. Finally, they settled on a location north of the abandoned Greater Southwest International Airport.
Construction began in 1969 and DFW Airport opened for commercial service on January 13, 1974. It was originally named Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Airport. The name changed to Dallas/Fort Worth International in 1985.
