“A bridge named after a battle? Now why would they do that?” You might ask this very question as you stand before the Pont du Garigliano. This bridge, connecting the 15th and 16th arrondissements of Paris, indeed takes its name from a significant World War II battle. The Battle of Garigliano, a victory for the Allied forces under General Juin’s command, took place in Italy in 1944. This victory played a crucial role in liberating Italy from Axis control. The Pont du Garigliano, however, wasn’t always the steel giant you see today. Before 1962, a two-level stone viaduct stood in its place. This viaduct, known as the Viaduc d’Auteuil or Viaduc du Point-du-Jour, carried trains on its upper level and road traffic below. However, with the rise of automobiles and the low arches posing a threat to river navigation, its days were numbered. Demolished in 1962, it paved the way for the modern Pont du Garigliano. Designed by architect Davy and engineer Thenault, the bridge boasts a unique feature – it’s the highest bridge in Paris, standing 18 meters above the Seine. Opened in 1966, the Pont du Garigliano stands as a testament to both engineering prowess and a reminder of a pivotal moment in history. Next time you cross this bridge, take a moment to appreciate its unique connection to the past and its role in shaping the Paris we know today.
