First Lutheran Church of West Seattle officially opened its doors in 1918. It began after years of dedicated missionary work. Reverend Hans Oppedal Reverend Olaf Holen and Reverend Erick B Slettedahl laid the foundation. Their tireless efforts transformed a vision into reality.
The first church was a simple wooden structure. It measured a modest 28 by 48 feet. The construction cost a mere $2000. Imagine the dedication required to build a house of worship with such limited resources. This small church served its congregation for many years. Today a model of this original building stands in the church’s lounge a touching tribute to its humble beginnings.
On Palm Sunday April 2 1950 the congregation moved into its current home. Designed by Rolland Denny Lamping a great-grandchild of Seattle’s founder Arthur A Denny the neo-Gothic style building is impressive. It stands tall at 100 feet long 45 feet wide and 48 feet high. The interior is breathtaking. Magnificent stained-glass windows fill the space with vibrant light. Concrete arches and pillars create a sense of awe. The 25-ton terrazzo floor adds a touch of elegance.
But the beauty extends beyond the architecture. The stained-glass windows themselves tell stories. The Great Altar Window a triptych depicting the Life of Christ is a masterpiece. Created by Anton Rez in the early 1950s it’s a stunning visual narrative. Other windows like those in the nave chapel and narthex each carry their own unique symbolism. They were created by various artists showcasing different styles and interpretations. Some of the windows were even restored in 1988 by Robert & Jill Hill. A book titled Painting With Light The Stained Glass Windows of First Lutheran Church of West Seattle chronicles this artistic legacy.
The Parish House dedicated in 1958 expanded the church’s capacity. It provides spaces for education and administration. It further solidified First Lutheran Church of West Seattle’s role as a community hub.
