Ligeti Szent Család templom

Hidden amidst the serene landscape of Zugliget, the Ligeti Szent Család templom stands as a testament to faith and family. This beautiful church, dedicated to the Holy Family, has a unique story intertwined with the history of Budapest. Almássy Mária, a leading figure of the English Ladies order in Hungary, envisioned a sanctuary in the tranquil hills of Buda. In the early 20th century, Zugliget was sparsely populated. It offered a peaceful retreat for spiritual contemplation. The English Ladies, known for their educational work, saw the Holy Family as the perfect patron for their new church and the accompanying school. The Pesti Hírlap, a local newspaper, reported on this ambitious project in 1909. The initial plan was a modest chapel. However, the growing Catholic community in Zugliget urged for a larger church. A grand structure capable of accommodating 1000 people was envisioned. The city of Budapest and the Ministry of Culture supported the project. Renowned architect Hülttl Dezső designed the Ligeti Szent Család templom. He drew inspiration from the English Ladies’ convent church in Rathfarnham, Ireland. The church features a neo-Romanesque style with a cruciform layout. Zseller Imre’s stunning mosaic of the Holy Family adorns the sanctuary. It’s considered one of the largest mosaics in Central Europe. The church windows, crafted by Zseller Imre, add a touch of artistry. The main altar, carved by Italian artist Del Amico, and the striking pulpit, showcase the church’s exquisite craftsmanship. In 1917, Cardinal János Csernoch consecrated the Ligeti Szent Család templom. Soon after, the English Ladies’ educational institute was built next to it. It later housed the Szent Család Leányinternátus (Holy Family Girls’ Boarding School). The school welcomed its first students in the 1927-28 academic year. The Ligeti Szent Család templom continues to serve the community of Zugliget. It’s a place of worship, reflection, and connection to the Holy Family.
