“Ready to explore a hidden gem gifted to the people of New Zealand?”

Wairoa Gorge Scenic Reserve is not just another pretty place. It’s a testament to conservation and recreation working hand in hand. Imagine a place where lush native forest meets world-class mountain biking trails. That’s Wairoa Gorge.

This scenic reserve is managed by the Department of Conservation. It offers a unique blend of ecological significance and thrilling outdoor activities.

In 2019, RHL NZ Ltd donated 860 hectares of land to the people of New Zealand. This act ensured the protection of this special area. Ken Dart, the owner of RHL, recognized the unique opportunity. He wanted to combine conservation with low-impact recreation.

The Nelson Mountain Bike Club continues to operate the mountain bike park. They have a 40-year lease to do so. A Wairoa Charitable Trust manages the land. Together, they ensure the reserve remains accessible and well-maintained.

The Wairoa Gorge boasts impressive natural features. It is surrounded by Mt Richmond Forest Park. About 560 hectares are covered in native forest. Almost 390 hectares are assessed as having high regional ecological significance.

Mountain bikers from around the world flock to Wairoa Gorge. They come to experience its hand-built trails. These trails meet international standards. They offer an unparalleled riding experience.

RHL prioritized being a good steward of the land. They built trails with careful consideration for water management. They also worked to minimize environmental impact. Annual programs of native replanting and pest control were implemented.

The Left Branch of the Wairoa River flows through the reserve. Beech-dominated forest covers much of the area. There is also matai-rich forest. You can also find other podocarp species. The area contains 93 different native plant species.

Birdlife thrives in Wairoa Gorge. Keep an eye out for tūī, korimako also known as bellbird, and kererū. You might spot kōtare a kingfisher, kārearea a native falcon, or ruru a morepork. Weka, toutouwai also known as robin, and pīpīwharauroa, the shining cuckoo also call this place home.

Wairoa Gorge Scenic Reserve is more than just a park. It represents a commitment to preserving natural beauty. It also provides opportunities for recreation. It’s a place where nature and adventure meet. A legacy for generations to come.
