Did Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha really give Beşiktaş its name? We’re standing in Beşiktaş, a vibrant district steeped in history. It hugs the European side of the Bosphorus. Beşiktaş translates to “cradle stone”. One story claims the name comes from a stone, shaped like a cradle, used in Jesus’s baptism. A cleric brought this sacred relic to a church here. Another story credits Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha. He supposedly erected five stone mooring posts for ships, called “beş taş” (five stones). Over time, “beş taş” morphed into Beşiktaş. This area has been a bustling hub for centuries. During the Byzantine era, it was called Diplokionion, meaning “double pillar”. These pillars marked a significant entry point from the Bosphorus into Constantinople. Beşiktaş offered shelter from the fierce northeasterly winds. This made it a perfect mooring spot for ships, even back in ancient times. The Bosphorus itself resonates with Greek mythology and history. Beşiktaş likely featured in tales like Jason and the Argonauts. The Byzantines built churches, a monastery, and even a summer palace here, called Ayios Mamas. Unfortunately, raiders from the Black Sea often plundered these coastal settlements. Little remains of the original Byzantine architecture. The Ottomans later secured the Black Sea, bringing a renewed sense of safety to Beşiktaş. Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha built his palace and mosque here. Beşiktaş became a vital crossing point for caravans traversing Anatolia and the Silk Road. Ottoman armies also used this route. The Ottoman rulers, captivated by Beşiktaş’s beauty, built hunting lodges and grand palaces. These structures became the backdrop for pivotal events. These include the dethronement of Sultan Abdülaziz at Dolmabahçe Palace in 1876. Another significant event was the declaration of the Ottoman parliament in 1908. The area also witnessed the deposition of Sultan Abdul Hamid II at Yıldız Palace in 1909. After the Turkish Republic’s establishment in 1923, the Ottoman ruling family was exiled. Their palaces and mansions were repurposed as government offices, schools, or sadly, demolished. A key figure connected to Beşiktaş is Zübeyde Hanım, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s mother. She lived in the heart of Beşiktaş, near the Beşiktaş J.K. headquarters. Atatürk himself departed from Beşiktaş on the Bandırma ship on May 16, 1919, beginning his journey to Samsun. He also spent considerable time at Dolmabahçe Palace during his presidency. Beşiktaş remains a dynamic district. It blends its rich history with modern life, home to universities, businesses, and passionate football fans. The echoes of centuries past still resonate here, on the shores of the Bosphorus.
