What tales do the waters of Cipinang River whisper to those who listen closely? Cipinang River flows through Jakarta. It is a vital part of the city’s landscape. The name Cipinang combines ‘Ci’ meaning water and ‘Pinang’ which is a type of palm tree. It’s a fitting name for a place where water and nature meet.

The river originates in Depok, West Java. It winds its way towards Banjir Kanal Timur and the Sunter River. The Cipinang River stretches for about 37 kilometers. Its waters eventually join the Sunter River.

Once upon a time, the Cipinang River was crystal clear. Locals used it for bathing. The river teemed with fish like tilapia and catfish. It was a source of life. The river was seven meters wide and four meters deep.

Over the years, things changed. More houses sprung up along its banks. The river narrowed and became polluted. Industrial waste turned its waters black. Trash piled up where ponds once stood. The Cipinang River often caused floods during the rainy season. The worst flood occurred in 2015.

But there is hope for the Cipinang River. In 2014, the Jakarta government started a rehabilitation project. They worked to widen the river to 12 meters. They also deepened it to 3 meters. In 2015, Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama ordered the removal of accumulated garbage. This garbage had been there for 30 years. Some residents were relocated. The government bought houses and lands along the riverbanks.

The government’s efforts aim to prevent future flooding in East Jakarta. The Cipinang River flows through Makassar. Many houses line its banks. The average daily rainfall is 136 mm. The peak debit reaches 85 m3.

The climate here is tropical rainforest. The average annual temperature is 28 degrees Celsius. September is the warmest month. May is the coldest. The average annual rainfall is 3674 mm. December is the wettest month. September is the driest.

The Cipinang River has a watershed area of 57.45 km2. It reflects Jakarta’s history. It shows both the beauty of nature and the challenges of urbanization. The story of Cipinang reminds us of the importance of caring for our rivers. Efforts to restore the Cipinang River continue. The goal is to bring it back to its former glory. A cleaner Cipinang means a healthier Jakarta.
