Hidden away in Marseille’s 11th arrondissement, Château Saint-Antoine stands as a silent keeper of stories. It’s not just a beautiful building. It’s a place where history, literature, and even a touch of mystery intertwine. Château Saint-Antoine began its life in 1792 as “La Rousse,” a grand Italian-inspired bastide. Imagine strolling through its gardens in those early days. You might have glimpsed the very scenes Marcel Pagnol later immortalized in his poignant novel, “Le Château de ma Mère” (“My Mother’s Castle”). Château Saint-Antoine’s walls also echo with the memory of Commandant Guy de Robien, a true hero who called this place home in the early 20th century. He added the two wings to the château, leaving his mark on its architecture. The château’s journey took a turn in 1940 when it became the property of a bauxite processing plant. It was modernized, but also sadly neglected. By 1988, Château Saint-Antoine had fallen into disrepair, a target for vandals and even a training ground for the GIGN, France’s elite tactical police unit. Can you picture the once-grand halls echoing with the sounds of drills and simulated operations? But Château Saint-Antoine was destined for a brighter future. In 2016, the Grande Loge de France, the governing body of Freemasonry in France, stepped in, purchasing the dilapidated structure. They embarked on an ambitious restoration, adding a modern extension and transforming Château Saint-Antoine into their headquarters. Today, Château Saint-Antoine serves as a hub for Masonic activities, housing multiple temples and a grand temple with an impressive 400 seats. But it’s not solely for Masons. The château also opens its doors to the public for cultural events and conferences. You can even dine at the Restaurant Saint Antoine, enjoying a meal in this unique setting. Or perhaps browse the Comptoir du Livre, a specialized bookshop where you can delve into the world of Freemasonry, symbolism, and philosophy. Château Saint-Antoine is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to resilience and the power of transformation. It stands as a reminder that even in the face of decay and neglect, beauty can be reborn, stories can be preserved, and history can continue to unfold.
