Picture this. You stand before St Francis Church in Melbourne. Its walls whisper tales of a city’s birth. This isn’t just any church. It’s the oldest Catholic church in Victoria. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and Melbourne’s rich history.

St Francis Church was founded in 1841. The foundation stone was laid on October 4th the feast day of St Francis of Assisi. Father Patrick Geoghegan the first resident Catholic priest in the Port Phillip District oversaw its creation. Imagine a simple timber chapel the church’s humble beginnings. That first Mass in 1842. Mary MacKillop was baptised here in 1842.

The church we see today is the result of several additions. Samuel Jackson designed the main structure. Later additions include the ornate Ladye Chapel. It was built in the 1850s and decorated by Le Gould and Souter. The Renaissance Revival style sanctuary was added in the late 1870s. A new front porch appeared in 1956. The original 1853 bell imported from Dublin now sits in a new tower a gift from the Grollo family.

St Francis Church served as Melbourne’s first Catholic cathedral. This was from 1848 to 1868. Then the diocesan seat moved to St Patrick’s Cathedral. It was more than a place of worship. It hosted weddings like that of Edward de Lacy Evans and Mary Delahunty in 1856. It also hosted marriages of people like Marion Edwards and Lucy Minihan in 1900. Many Catholic organizations were based here.

The church is on the Victorian Heritage Inventory. It remains central to Melbourne’s life. It’s one of the city’s busiest churches with thousands of worshippers weekly. Since 1929 the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament has cared for this place of faith. They built a monastery in the late 1930s.

This church isn’t just stone and mortar. It’s a story. A vibrant chapter in Melbourne’s history. It’s a beacon of faith. It stands as a reminder of the enduring spirit of the city and its people. It’s a place where history lives and breathes. A place where faith continues to inspire.
