“How did a church from a remote archipelago end up here in Jakarta?” you might wonder. The story of Gereja Masehi Injili Sangihe Talaud Resort Indonesia Barat Jemaat Betlehem is one of faith, migration, and community. It echoes the journey of the Sangihe and Talaud people.

The Christian Evangelical Church in Sangihe-Talaud began its journey in 1857. Carpenter missionaries from Germany arrived. They were sent by the Dutch Missionary Society. They worked in the Sangihe Islands. These islands are located north of Sulawesi. These missionaries were craftsmen and gospel teachers. Their mission faced isolation and many difficulties.

After the initial missionaries passed, the mission society formed a committee. This committee ensured the work continued. In 1947, the responsibility shifted. The synod of the Christian Evangelical Church of Sangihe Talaud took over. This church is known as GMIST. It operates under a Presbyterian-Synodal system. Its beliefs are based on the Apostle’s Creed and the Creed of Nicea-Constantinople.

The Sangihe and Talaud Islands consist of 124 islands. Initially, GMIST was active on only 42 of them. In 2001, a decision was made. A new church was formed. It was named the Christian Evangelical Church in Talaud or GERMITA. This church served congregations throughout the Talaud archipelago.

GMIST plays a significant role in its community. It runs many schools. There are 70 kindergartens, 136 primary schools, four secondary schools, and one high school. The church also focuses on community health services. These services particularly target people in remote areas. They promote inter-faith dialogue. This is a response to regional and national religious conflicts.

Over time, members of the GMIST migrated. They moved from their island home to other parts of Indonesia. Some settled in Jakarta. They brought their faith and traditions with them. This led to the establishment of congregations like Jemaat Betlehem. It serves the Sangihe and Talaud diaspora.
