Was this once a vast expanse of water? Before you stands Mocsárosdűlő a unique part of Budapest. Its name reveals its history. Mocsáros means marshy. Dűlő refers to a vineyard plot. This area was once a marshy floodplain. The Danube’s floods often covered it. Rainwater from the surrounding hills further contributed to the swampy conditions. Nearby springs added to the waterlogged soil. High waters from the Danube especially in winter raised the water table. Even the Római-fürdő (Roman Baths) received water from a nearby karst spring. In summer though the water table dropped. Some of it flowed towards the Római-fürdő.
Mocsárosdűlő’s appearance has changed greatly over the past 100 years. The construction of the embankment and the Roman Baths altered the landscape. Agricultural areas and settlements further reduced the area’s marshy nature. Industrial development added to the transformation. Early attempts to protect Mocsárosdűlő were unsuccessful. There were several proposals for its protection. One in 1942 was combined with other areas. The war however prevented action. Another proposal in 1958 also failed. From the mid-1960s significant development started along the western side of the HÉV line. The beach bath also underwent changes.
By the end of the 1990s more than 50% of the plants showed signs of degradation. Plans for residential areas and even a Gulliver-themed sculpture were proposed. These plans thankfully never materialized. In the early 2000s further plans for houses and sports facilities were proposed. Eventually in 2002 the area finally gained protected status. This was a close call. Little remained of the original landscape to protect. Its value is significant though as a rare wetland in the city. Older surveys indicated that three-quarters of the plant species represented natural conditions.
The protected status allows grazing with sheep cattle and horses. The animals help maintain the area. The soil and vegetation are slowly recovering. In 2012 eight educational signs were installed. That year parts of Mocsárosdűlő gained additional protection. The Aquincum-Mocsáros Association works to protect the local ecosystem. They organize cleanup events. They work to preserve this unique wetland area a testament to nature’s resilience in the midst of a bustling city. Mocsárosdűlő is a reminder of Budapest’s fascinating past. It’s a place where history and nature coexist.
