Did Carl Gabrielson ever imagine his name would grace a park brimming with music and laughter? Gabrielson Park, nestled beside the Sausalito Ferry pier, pulsates with life, a stark contrast to its humble beginnings. This waterfront gem, with its breathtaking views of Angel Island and the Bay Bridge, wasn’t always so inviting. Once known as “The Hole,” the area was a muddy, unattractive expanse, frequently submerged at high tide. The city owned the land, but a fifty-year lease and building restrictions hampered any improvement efforts. Then, in 1964, the Sausalito Rotary Club, led by Marcus Davis, embarked on a mission to transform this eyesore. Their project to beautify “The Hole” faced an uphill battle, requiring over a thousand cubic yards of sand and planting soil, irrigation pipes, and countless hours of volunteer labor. The project even stalled briefly when the city considered the site for a new library. But after a failed bond issue and the leaseholder’s generous release of the property, the Rotary Club persevered. In 1968, Gabrielson Park was born, a testament to community spirit and the dedication of Rotarians like George Carney. The park was named in honor of Carl Gabrielson, a former city council member and dedicated Rotarian known for his contributions to Sausalito and Japan. Today, Gabrielson Park is far more than just a pretty space. It is the vibrant heart of Sausalito, hosting the lively Jazz and Blues by the Bay concerts every Friday during the summer. The park also serves as the spectacular backdrop for the city’s Fourth of July fireworks display. Imagine standing here, amidst the music and revelry, soaking in the stunning views and festive atmosphere. The laughter and cheers echoing across the bay are a fitting tribute to the man whose name graces this remarkable park. From a muddy “Hole” to a beloved community gathering space, Gabrielson Park is a testament to the power of community vision and the enduring legacy of one dedicated Rotarian.
