Hidden amidst the bustling city of Melbourne lies Ruffey Lake Park. It’s a sprawling 68-hectare sanctuary. Can you hear the gentle rustling of leaves? It’s a symphony of nature, a stark contrast to the urban hum just beyond Ruffey Lake Park’s borders. This isn’t just any park. It’s a place where history whispers through the trees and the water glistens with stories of the past. Ruffey Lake Park wasn’t always a tranquil escape. It was once a patchwork of orchards, carved from the native bushland by early settlers. Imagine the landscape transformed, rows of fruit trees heavy with pears, peaches, apples, lemons, and more. The very ground we stand on was once nourished by the Thiele, Williamson, and Crouch families, who cultivated this land and left their mark on Ruffey Lake Park. In the mid-1960s, the vision for a green sanctuary began to take root. The then City of Doncaster and Templestowe Council acquired the land. It would eventually evolve into the Ruffey Lake Park we cherish today. Ruffey Creek, the park’s namesake, meanders through the landscape. It was dammed in the mid-1990s, creating the shimmering Ruffey Lake. This lake isn’t just a scenic centerpiece. It plays a vital role in managing stormwater drainage, a hidden function of this urban oasis. As you stroll through Ruffey Lake Park, keep an eye out for remnants of its orchard past. You might spot a lone fruit tree, a silent testament to the park’s agricultural heritage. One particularly notable tree is the Black Achon pear tree near Victoria Street, planted by Gottlieb Thiele over 130 years ago. It still bears fruit! Near the lake, a hill beckons BMX enthusiasts, its slopes carved with their adventurous tracks. Three playgrounds offer a haven for children’s laughter, each with its own unique charm. The Victoria Street playground boasts a three-story adventure playground. The Boulevard playground is nestled in a hilly area. The Church Road North playground encourages exploration of the natural landscape. Ruffey Lake Park is more than just a park. It’s a living tapestry woven with history, nature, and community. Each corner you explore reveals a new facet of its rich story.
