Has anyone ever noticed how art can sometimes resemble a giant game of Jenga? Well, the Life Rings sculpture here at UT Southwestern seems to embody that very idea. The Life Rings, a vibrant red-and-white striped sculpture, stand tall and proud near the South Campus entrance. This striking work by Elmgreen & Dragset, gifted by Dr. Joseph Goldstein, adds a playful yet thought-provoking touch to the university’s landscape. The Life Rings are more than just an eye-catching display. They represent the fifth piece of outdoor art Dr. Goldstein has donated to UT Southwestern. Other notable works nearby include a massive organic structure called Dumna and angular metallic pieces by Joel Shapiro. Life Rings, Fig. 2, the official name, is composed of over three dozen interlinked life preservers. They reach towards the sky in a precarious yet captivating arrangement. Dr. Goldstein, a Nobel laureate known for his contributions to science and his love of art, selected this piece. He appreciated the artists’ ability to juxtapose familiar objects in unfamiliar settings. Interestingly, the life preservers are made of stainless steel. This ironic choice reminds us of the sculpture’s artistic purpose. It is not meant for actual lifesaving but rather for intellectual stimulation. The sculpture’s creation involved months of planning and international collaboration. It was fabricated in Germany, shipped across the ocean, and carefully installed on a specially designed foundation here in Dallas. Dr. Goldstein hopes that the Life Rings will evoke a variety of interpretations. Some might see the interlocked rings as symbols of cooperation and support, while others might view them as individuals striving for freedom. Whatever your perspective, the Life Rings at UT Southwestern are sure to leave a lasting impression.
