A whisper of history stirs in the gentle breeze. Welcome to Parc Pastrė. This sprawling 112-hectare haven nestled in Marseille’s 8th arrondissement is more than just a park. It’s a living testament to a family’s legacy and a city’s resilience.

Imagine the year 1836. Eugénie Pastrė purchases a modest seven-hectare plot near the chemin de la Madrague. This seemingly small acquisition was the seed from which Parc Pastrė would blossom. She saw potential in the fruit trees the vineyards the well that fed a watering basin. She saw a future far beyond the small 90 square-meter bastide that already stood there.

The Pastrė family’s ambition knew no bounds. They strategically expanded their holdings. They acquired neighboring land even property from the Clary family distant relatives of the Queen of Sweden. By 1847 the estate had grown significantly through shrewd purchases. The family’s expansion was not only about land acquisition but also a family strategy for generations to come.

Three remarkable 19th-century bastides now stand as proud symbols of this expansion. Château Pastrė once home to the Musée de la Faïence is perhaps the most famous. Château Estrangin and Château Sanderval add to the historic charm. These buildings tell a tale of wealth and architectural ambition against a background of stunning natural beauty.

During World War II Countess Lily Pastrė transformed Château Pastrė into a haven. She sheltered artists and Jewish people facing persecution. Her acts of bravery made this a significant site of resistance. It’s a hidden chapter in the park’s rich history.

In the years between 1966 and 1987 the city of Marseille acquired almost the entire Pastrė estate from Countess Lily Pastrė and her heirs. The vast space became the public park we know today. It stands as a testament to the family’s generosity and the city’s commitment to preserving its green spaces.

Today Parc Pastrė offers more than just green spaces. There are walking paths an accrobranche course a riding center even carousels for children. It’s a place for family outings picnics and even hiking into the nearby Calanques.

This park is more than just a landscape. It’s a story. It’s a testament to a family’s vision. It’s a symbol of resistance. It’s a tranquil oasis in the heart of a bustling city. Enjoy your exploration of Parc Pastrė. Let its history its beauty its serenity fill you.
