“A gem on Central Road.” That’s how Johns Park is often described. This park is a favorite warm weather destination within the Park District. Let’s step inside and explore its story.
Johns Park wasn’t always called Johns Park. Back in April 1958, voters approved a bond issue. The bond paid for the acquisition and development of Elm Park. It was only 8.7 acres then.
In 1990, Elm Park was renamed Richard E. Johns Park. This was in honor of Glenview Park District General Superintendent Richard E. Johns. He held that position for 34 years. A long time.
More improvements came in March 1962. Another bond issue was approved. The park development was completed in 1962 and 1963 with these funds.
A field house was constructed in 1963. It provided a central hub for activities. In 1995, the field house got a renovation. Disability access was added.
The park continued to evolve. In December 1975, lights were installed. These lights illuminated the tennis courts and the basketball court. Now people could play even after sunset.
Parking became an issue as the park grew in popularity. In December 1982, another bond issue was approved. This time it was for capital improvement projects. Increased parking facilities were added in 1983.
More upgrades happened in 1995. Sports lighting was replaced. Tennis and basketball courts were resurfaced. Sand volleyball courts were installed.
The park district undertook a capital replacement program. As part of this program, Johns Park was renovated in 2008. It ensured the park remained modern and appealing.
Today, Johns Park offers a variety of amenities. There are four outdoor volleyball courts. These are available on a first come first served basis.
For the little ones, there’s a state-of-the-art playground. They can swing and slide to their heart’s content.
Tennis enthusiasts can enjoy five lighted tennis courts. There is also a backboard for solo practice.
A full-size lighted basketball court is available. Sharpen your skills or engage in a friendly game.
There is also one baseball backstop. This is perfect for practicing your hitting.
The fieldhouse can accommodate up to 48 guests. Rent the fieldhouse for your next gathering.
The picnic area can comfortably accommodate up to 100 people. Pack a lunch and enjoy the outdoors.
During the winter season, there’s an ice-skating rink. It’s lighted for evening activities and closes nightly at 10 p.m.
Sledding is also permitted when there’s enough snow. The sled hill is lighted for evening activities. It also closes nightly at 10 p.m.
Johns Park has truly transformed over the years. From its humble beginnings as Elm Park. To its current status as a beloved community hub. It continues to offer something for everyone.
