The Lawndale Church of Christ is a beacon of hope in the heart of Chicago. It stands tall and proud, a testament to the resilient spirit of the community. Wayne Gordon, a white man from Iowa, felt called to serve this predominantly Black neighborhood in the late 1970s. At a time when the area was struggling with poverty and disinvestment, Gordon started the church in 1978, meeting with a small group of high school students in a storefront building. This group of young people was hungry for change and believed in the power of their community.
Today, Lawndale Church of Christ is more than just a place of worship; it’s a hub of service and transformation. Under Wayne Gordon’s guidance, it developed various ministries, including a health center, housing programs, a legal center, and a Hope House ministry to support men coming out of prison.
The church started in a small storefront, but now serves thousands of people in Chicago. It’s a shining example of how even in the face of adversity, love and compassion can bring about positive change.
