The remnants of the Château de Romainville are a stark reminder of a bygone era. A once-grand edifice, it stood proudly since 1630 when Nicolas de Quelen, the lord of the manor, commissioned its construction. In 1723, the château was passed into the hands of the noble de Ségur family, renowned for their illustrious lineage. The grand park that surrounded the Château de Romainville during its heydey was a spectacle to behold. It boasted an impressive orangery and a charming pavilion dedicated to the sweet sounds of music. But fate had a different plan for the château and its opulent grounds. The park was subsequently utilized as a gypsum quarry, and its excavations reached depths of 60 meters. After the demise of the Marquis de Noailles in 1838, the château was sold to an English company, whose primary interest was the exploitation of gypsum. Parts of the château were demolished as early as 1840, and the remaining structure was repurposed as the administrative offices for the quarry. The city acquired it in 1988, and it was then purchased by the region for use as a recreational area. Sadly, the château suffered a devastating fire. Only ruins remained, and they were demolished in early 2017. It seems like the magic of the past is only a faint whisper in the air now. A small park has been opened to the public, replacing the majestic château. The city hopes to reconstruct a site dedicated to memory and exposition, but the grand Château de Romainville remains a relic of a bygone era, a reminder of the ephemeral nature of grandeur, and the steadfast passage of time.
