“A lantern? That’s an odd name for an alleyway, don’t you think?” The Allée de la Lanterne. It seems innocuous enough. However, this simple name holds a dark and chilling past. It hearkens back to the French Revolution, a period of upheaval and bloodshed. During those turbulent times, the cry of “À la lanterne!” would ring through the streets of Paris. It was a call to vigilante justice, to stringing up perceived enemies of the Revolution from the city’s lampposts. Imagine the terror of those deemed enemies of the people. Their fate hanging quite literally above them.
