Seventeen hundred and fifty years ago a vision took root. A vision to educate the poorest children of Bethnal Green. That vision blossomed into St John’s C of E Primary School. It stands before you a testament to enduring dedication.
St John’s is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant community. A place where twenty-one cultures intertwine. Where children aged three to eleven learn and grow. Initially built in 1841 it once housed 670 children. Its original charter aimed to provide a good sound education to the area’s most disadvantaged children. Today its classrooms buzz with 158 pupils.
The school’s Victorian structure remains. You can still see hints of its past if you look closely. Recent renovations have improved the school. A new nursery and reception building opened in 2012. An upgraded ICT suite and library enhance learning experiences. The Year 1 classroom and main reception area have also seen improvements.
St John’s motto Let Our Light Shine comes from the Sermon on the Mount. It inspires the school’s values. Wisdom compassion humility forgiveness endurance and koinonia or community guide the school’s ethos. Children learn these values through their daily lives. They might support a local homeless shelter or simply comfort a classmate.
The school embraces its Christian heritage. It has close ties to St John’s on Bethnal Green and St Barnabas churches. Collective worship and termly church visits are part of the routine. However St John’s welcomes children of all faiths and none. It celebrates diversity and fosters inclusivity. It truly shines as a beacon of learning and community in the heart of Bethnal Green.
