We’re standing in front of the Centre for English Language Communication, better known as CELC. This unassuming building plays a vital role in shaping the communication skills of NUS students. The CELC wasn’t always called CELC. It started its life in 1979 as the English Language Proficiency Unit (ELPU). This change reflects the center’s evolution from a focus solely on proficiency to a broader approach encompassing all aspects of communication. CELC is a dedicated department within NUS, focused entirely on teaching and improving English language skills. It’s not a faculty in itself, but its impact resonates throughout the university. The CELC offers a wide array of courses, workshops, and resources designed to empower students with the communication skills they need to excel in their academic pursuits and future careers. They even host a symposium! The 7th CELC Symposium in 2025 focused on “Gearing Up Future-ready Learners.” Experts like Professors Cecilia Chan, Heath Rose, Icy Lee, and Jessie Moore were invited to share their insights on English language and communication teaching in higher education.
