In 1877, a beacon of faith arose amidst the ancient stones of Dubrovnik. This is the story of the Crkva Vozdviženja Časnog Krsta, better known as the Church of the Holy Annunciation. A testament to the enduring spirit of the Serbian Orthodox community, this church stands as a symbol of resilience and devotion. Its story begins long before its construction, rooted in a desire for a dedicated space for Orthodox worship within the city walls. The demand for a church first surfaced in 1770 during a time of political upheaval. Count Orlov’s fleet, tasked with inciting rebellion in Greece, seized Dubrovnik’s ships carrying Ottoman reinforcements. This event highlighted the need for a place of solace and unity for the Orthodox faithful. Years later, in 1867, a wealthy merchant named Božo Bošković secured a plot of land within Dubrovnik’s historic walls. He purchased three houses belonging to Baron Frano Gondola, complete with a garden, laying the foundation for the future church. The Crkva Vozdviženja Časnog Krsta, completed in 1877, became more than just a place of worship. It became a repository of history and art, housing a precious collection of icons, some dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. These sacred images whispered stories of faith and tradition, passed down through generations. The church also bore witness to turbulent times. During the Siege of Dubrovnik, the church suffered damage, a scar of conflict etched into its very stones. Yet, like the city itself, the church endured. In 2009, a restoration project breathed new life into the Crkva Vozdviženja Časnog Krsta. Funded by various sources, this marked the first major restoration in the church’s history. It stands today as a symbol of hope, its restored beauty a reflection of the community’s unwavering spirit. Beyond its religious significance, the Church of the Holy Annunciation also houses a museum and library. The museum showcases a fascinating array of religious artifacts, including a copy of the Miroslav Gospels, old gospels, icons, and priestly vestments. The library boasts an impressive collection of 12,000 books in various languages, offering a glimpse into the intellectual and spiritual life of the community. The Crkva Vozdviženja Časnog Krsta, a sanctuary of faith and history, invites you to step inside and experience its unique story. Here, within these hallowed walls, the past and present intertwine, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Dubrovnik’s cultural heritage.
