Lucien Guitry was not just any comedian. He was a prominent figure in the world of French theatre. He even partnered with the iconic Sarah Bernhardt. His career took him internationally including a long stint in Moscow. He was also the father of Sacha Guitry.
The Lucien Guitry Bust is the work of sculptor Paul Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger created a lasting image of the actor. The bust captures Guitry’s essence in bronze.
The story of how this bust came to be is interesting. In 1928 Sacha Guitry requested permission to erect a bust in memory of his father. He represented the union of French-language artists. He proposed placing it in the wall of his father’s property.
There was a legal hurdle. A 1911 law stated that a monument to a great man could only be erected ten years after his death. An exception was made for Lucien Guitry. The municipal council granted authorization in December 1928.
The Lucien Guitry Bust was finally inaugurated on November 10 1931. It stood near the site of Lucien Guitry’s former residence. He had built the house after a triumphant tour in Latin America. Sadly the hotel was destroyed in 1964.
