Long ago a simple prayer hall stood in Jakarta. This was the humble beginning of Masjid Jami Al Amin. It was called Surau Panggung a basic Langgar. It resided behind H Mustofa bin H Mahpuz’s home. H Muhammad bin H Mugheni built it. He used land owned by Hj Mudjenah. This was sometime in the 1920s.
In July 1968 the Surau’s managers decided to move it. They would also rename it. The new name was Musholla Al Amin. It was built on 258 square meters of wakaf land. This belonged to H Asnawi bin H Thamrin. He dedicated it to his father H Thamrin bin Reudin.
A building committee formed in August 1968. Yusuf Djohan led the effort. H Muhammad bin H Mugheni advised them. H Fadhil bin Thabrani chaired the committee. H Mustofa bin H Mahpuz served as secretary. H Abdul Fatah bin H Achyar oversaw the project. H Abdul Ghani bin H Mugheni assisted them.
On August 2nd 1968 they laid the foundation stone. KH Rahmatullah Siddiq and KH Siddiq bin H Daud officiated. Drs Zaenuddin the Kebon Jeruk sub-district head was there. H Umar Izzi the Sukabumi Utara village head also attended. By December 1968 the Musholla was complete. It opened for congregational prayers.
For twenty-six years the Musholla served the community. Minor renovations took place. Then in 1994 a major renovation was planned. In 1995 a complete rebuilding and renovation began. A pendopo was added in 2012 to expand the worship space.
Masjid Jami Al Amin’s history shows faith perseverance and community effort. It grew from a simple Surau into a significant mosque. The mosque stands as a testament to the dedication of those who built and rebuilt it. Masjid Jami Al Amin remains a vital part of its community. It is a place of prayer and a symbol of Jakarta’s Islamic heritage.
