The eternal flame flickers, a silent sentinel against the backdrop of history. Welcome to the Holocaust-Mahnmal, a stark reminder of the horrors inflicted by the Nazi regime. The square where we stand was once the site of the Gestapo headquarters. Just across the street, the Wittelsbacher Palais once stood, a towering edifice of power. However, during the Third Reich, this palace became a place of unimaginable brutality, where countless innocent lives were brutally extinguished. Today, this once imposing building lies in ruins, demolished during World War II, but its chilling shadow still hangs over this place. The Holocaust-Mahnmal, a granite column by Andreas Sobeck, stands as a monumental testament to remembrance. Sobeck crafted a six-meter-tall structure, capped by a steel lattice, trapping the eternal flame within. This symbolic cage represents the human spirit, unyielding in the face of oppression. The flame symbolizes hope, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, our spirits can never be truly extinguished. In 1946, the city fathers, acknowledging the atrocities committed, renamed this square the “Platz der Opfer des Nationalsozialismus,” or the “Square of the Victims of National Socialism.” This solemn dedication stands as a promise to never forget the suffering and to strive for a future where such horrors will never be repeated. The Holocaust-Mahnmal serves a powerful purpose: a constant reminder of the importance of memory and the fight against hatred and persecution. Take a moment, look around, and let the silence speak.
