White Bear Center for the Arts has a rich history. Its roots go back to Edna Imm. She was an art teacher in White Bear Lake. In the 1930s and 40s, she gathered artists for classes. Sister Florentine organized the White Bear Arts Council in 1968. She worked alongside artists like Polly Shank and Frank Zeller. In 1997, they moved to the Armory. That’s when they became White Bear Center for the Arts.
The White Bear Center for the Arts enriches the community through art. It offers over a thousand art classes each year. These classes span traditions and generations. They welcome all abilities and cultures. Over 60 community events happen each year. These free events bring people together.
The White Bear Center for the Arts serves over 20,000 people annually. Outreach programs serve over 6,500 youth. They also help people of all ages living with disabilities. They reach people in institutions and those with housing instability.
In 2021, White Bear Center for the Arts had a grand reopening. This followed a 12,000 sq. foot expansion. It now features a new gallery and a walking labyrinth. You will also find a retail space and a clay wing. The White Bear Center for the Arts is now ADA-accessible. It provides a welcoming home for the arts.
White Bear Center for the Arts offers three studio classrooms. A clay studio is well-equipped. An art resources library is also available. Outside, find a walking labyrinth and rain gardens. A patio space, prairie and landscaped grounds await you.
The White Bear Center for the Arts features three free galleries. They showcase over 15 exhibitions each year. These range from student to international artists. Local artists are featured as well.
WBCA is an epicenter of discovery. It strengthens community bonds through art. The universal language of art builds friendships. Past board member Kim Ford emphasized this. White Bear Center for the Arts has a mission to enrich lives. It wants to nourish imagination. It strives to build understanding by connecting people. The organization is powered by dedicated staff. Over 120 teaching artists and 180+ volunteers contribute. They represent diverse ages and backgrounds.
