Though it may seem like a natural wonder, Lake Kurwongbah is actually a testament to human ingenuity. Created in 1958, this man-made reservoir was the result of damming Sideling Creek. The dam, an engineering marvel of its time, serves a vital purpose. It ensures a steady water supply to the region, particularly during drier periods, and played a crucial role in supplying the Amcor paper mill in nearby Petrie. Conceived as a replacement for the Strathpine circuit, it quickly gained fame, even hosting the Australian Grand Prix in 1966. The roar of engines and cheers of crowds once filled the air, adding a thrilling chapter to Kurwongbah’s story.
