Did you know that Dakabin’s name comes from an Aboriginal word for grass tree? The name is a reminder of the region’s rich Indigenous history, a history that stretches back thousands of years. Standing here today, it’s hard to imagine this bustling suburb as a rural district. Dakabin was once home to just a handful of families. They made their living from the land, farming and grazing cattle. Back then, you could see vast stretches of rolling hills. There was a sawmill where the smell of freshly cut timber filled the air. The local bakery would fill the air with the scent of warm bread. The railway line, the western boundary of the suburb, played a vital role. It brought goods and people to the area. It’s hard to imagine now, but way back in 1896, there was an explosives storage depot just near the line called ‘Magazine Siding’. It was used by the Brisbane Port Authority. The explosives were finally removed in 1963. It’s a testament to how much Dakabin has changed and grown. Today, Dakabin is a thriving community with a diverse population. The bustling suburb is full of residents from all different backgrounds. It’s a reminder of the journey Dakabin has taken, from a small rural district to the vibrant community that it is today.
