Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Minneapolis, discover St. Frances Cabrini Church. St. Frances Cabrini Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to community spirit and resilience. Established in 1946, the church, initially led by Father Brian Keaney, began its journey in a repurposed room at 601 Oak Street. This humble space, known as St. Robert’s Chapel, hosted confessions, services, and even upwards of 80 baptisms. Later, the church services transitioned to the Campus Theater and Sidney Pratt School gymnasium. St. Frances Cabrini Church officially opened its doors on June 27, 1947. The unique architectural design, a departure from traditional styles, garnered both criticism and acclaim, even winning first prize in a national contest in 1948. The church’s design came from the minds of Long & Thorshaw, a Minneapolis firm, with parishioner and University of Minnesota architecture professor Robert Cerney as a consultant. St. Frances Cabrini Church was more than bricks and mortar. It was a melting pot of people from all walks of life. Professors mingled with those with limited schooling. Affluent families connected with those relying on welfare. This diverse community united to overcome financial challenges, working side-by-side in the kitchen during bazaar time. The 1950s brought both challenges and triumphs. The expansion of the University and construction of freeways displaced many families, impacting the church’s growth. Yet, under Father Henry Sledz, who became pastor in 1951, the church remained a vital part of the community. His tenure included leading the parish, chairing Sodalities for the diocese, and serving as the sole Catholic chaplain for University Hospital. St. Frances Cabrini Church embraced its community through sports. Father Harold Bury, who joined in 1955, established hockey, baseball, and football teams open to all children, regardless of faith. This fostered a sense of belonging and strengthened the church’s connection with Prospect Park. In 1963, the church merged with the Newman Center, becoming the University Church of St. Frances Cabrini. This union provided access to both church and Newman Center activities and resources. St. Frances Cabrini Church’s story is one of humble beginnings, architectural innovation, community spirit, and enduring faith. It’s a story etched into the heart of Minneapolis.
