Imagine, if you will, a bustling scene from centuries past right where we stand in Anadolu Hisarı Mahallesi. Anadolu Hisarı, also known as the Anatolian Fortress, stands as a proud sentinel on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. It whispers tales of sieges, conquests, and the relentless march of history.

Anadolu Hisarı isn’t just a collection of stones. It is the oldest surviving Turkish architectural structure in Istanbul. Sultan Bayezid I, the great-grandfather of Mehmet the Conqueror, commissioned its construction between 1393 and 1394. He was preparing for a momentous siege. His target was none other than the Byzantine city of Constantinople.

Strategically positioned at the Bosphorus’ narrowest point, Anadolu Hisarı commanded the waterway. The strait measures a mere 660 meters here. The fortress sprawls across 7,000 square meters. It was erected primarily as a watch fort. Originally, a Roman temple dedicated to Uranus stood here.

Picture this: a quadratic main tower rising 25 meters high. It stands within irregular pentagon walls. Five watchtowers punctuate the corners. Constantinople faced a blockade from 1394. Bayezid’s campaign faced interruption from the Crusade of Nicopolis. His defeat at the Battle of Ankara followed. This ushered in an 11-year civil war. Mehmed I eventually ascended to the throne.

His grandson, Sultan Mehmed II, recognized Anadolu Hisarı’s strategic importance. He reinforced the fortress with a two-meter-thick wall. Three additional watchtowers were added. Warehouses and living quarters expanded the complex. Mehmed II had grand plans to conquer Constantinople. He built a sister fortress called Rumelihisarı. It stood across the Bosphorus.

In 1453, these two fortresses acted in perfect harmony. They choked off all maritime traffic. The Ottomans successfully seized Constantinople and renamed it Istanbul. It became their new imperial capital.

After the conquest, Anadolu Hisarı transitioned into a customs house and military prison. Centuries passed and the fortress gradually fell into disrepair. Following the Ottoman Empire’s fall and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the Turkish Ministry of Culture took charge. Restoration efforts occurred between 1991 and 1993. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality started the latest restoration in 2021.

Today, Anadolu Hisarı offers a picturesque scene. It is nestled among timber yalı homes along the Bosphorus. Although not open to the public, Anadolu Hisarı stands as a powerful reminder of Ottoman dominance. Its reflection shimmers in the waters. It echoes with the whispers of sultans and sieges, a beauteous fortress guarding the passage of time.
