Whispers of history echo around Bereketzade Cami. This mosque stands as a testament to time and resilience. Bereketzade Cami is known as the first mosque built in Galata after the conquest of Istanbul. It sits in the shadow of the iconic Galata Tower. The mosque lends its name to the Bereketzade Mahallesi, the neighborhood it graces.

Bereketzade Cami has a fascinating story. It was founded by Bereketzade Haci Ali Bin Hasan. He was a notable figure, the head-muezzin of Mehmed the Conqueror and the first commander of Galata. Originally, a madrasa and a fountain were also part of the complex. Sadly, the madrasa is no longer standing. The original fountain has been moved closer to the Galata Tower. It was rebuilt in 1732 by Defterdar Mehmed Efendi.

Over the years, Bereketzade Cami faced periods of closure and even destruction. In the 1920s, dwindling congregations led to its closure. Then, in the mid-20th century, between 1948 and 1952, it was completely demolished. Its grounds were repurposed as a parking lot. Despite these setbacks, the spirit of Bereketzade Cami endured. In the 1990s, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, with approval from the High Council for the Preservation of Cultural and Natural Assets, rebuilt the mosque. It was meticulously restored to its original form.

A captivating legend surrounds Bereketzade Cami. The mosque’s inscription speaks of a secret passage. It allegedly connected the Galata Tower to the mosque’s minaret. From there, it supposedly led down to the old harbor of Karaköy. This passage, said to be narrow enough for only one person to pass, adds a touch of intrigue to the mosque’s history. Excavations have partially unearthed this mysterious pathway, adding credibility to the legend. Today, Bereketzade Cami stands as a functioning place of worship. Its wooden roof and classic Ottoman design transport visitors back in time. It reminds us of a rich past while serving the present.
